Shoreditch Carnival & Car Free Day 2004: Sunday 19th September . Streets car-free from 8am to midnight. Event from noon till 9pm.
Hello and welcome to the first bulletin from the Shoreditch Carnival Team. This year's event takes place on Sunday 19 September 2004 in and around the car-free streets of south Shoreditch.
last year If you were there, you will have fond memories of the beautiful warm late September afternoon in 2003 when the streets inside the Shoreditch Triangle were opened up for music, stalls, barbecues, travel awareness promotion, children's entertainment, and general good-natured merriment.
The event was well attended, the atmosphere wonderfully friendly, and the feedback overwhelmingly positive. With a supportive response at public meetings held earlier in the year, we have been busy working away on the second edition of the Carnival. Read more about Carnival's history.
'Safe Streets for Children' Promoting sustainable mobility and a liveable city remains the central purpose of the event, providing a chance for people who live, work and play in Shoreditch to enjoy the luxury of car-free streets for the day.
'Safe Streets for Children' is the theme of this year's event - as with the hundreds of other European Mobility Week events happening in town centres across this continent. So there'll be a special emphasis on child-friendliness, with SureStart Hoxton collaborating on a colourful, fun children's area, and Bikefix hosting a children's cycle test track to complement the grown-up version.
music and entertainment Musical entertainment to be confirmed includes: the Pilsner Urquell Original Talent stage, with diverse live acts of such exceptional quality that they can't be announced until the day; the Showsomelove urban music area, complete with skate zone and half pipe; the ever-popular Secretsundaze sound system, hauling their funky breaks and beats onto the street; upbeat, uplifting music from binglybongly productions; and carnival roots and culture from Solution Sound System.
Among other amusements planned is a street-by-street beauty pageant, culminating with the Earl of Curtain Road, the Princess of Rivington Street, and perhaps even the Duke of French Place, vying for the title of the King or Queen of Shoreditch Carnival 2004.
All in all, it should be another great day. Put it in your diary now!
stalls The Shoreditch Carnival & Car Free Day is a great opportunity for traders or organisations based in the area to showcase themselves to the community. We already have quite a few stalls booked, for yoga and hydroponic furniture as well as t-shirts and books. If you would like to run a stall, please email stalls@shoreditchcarnival.org.uk
stewarding You can help make London's biggest and best Car Free Day happen - be a steward. Last year, our volunteer stewards provided friendly faces and directions to people attending the event, helping everything run smoothly. No experience necessary. Expenses paid. If you'd like to get involved, email stewards@shoreditchcarnival.org.uk
advertising For organisations who'd like to be seen by around 12,000 influential eyeballs - and support the event - ad spaces are available both in the programme (handed out to all comers) and on the back of the dozen or so rickshaws which will be giving free trips in and around the Shoreditch Triangle all day. Email ads@shoreditchcarnival.org.uk
getting in touch If you'd like to discuss any other ideas or arrangements - please contact the Shoreditch Carnival Team.
